Clackamas County honors Milwaukie art gallery for sustainable practices

Mark Gamba Gallery of Milwaukie has been recognized by Clackamas County with a Distinguished Business Recycling Awards Group (BRAG) membership certificate and recycled glass plaque from the Clackamas County Recycle at Work Program. Distinguished BRAG memberships go to high-achieving Clackamas County area businesses that recycle all curbside materials regularly, prevent waste with at least six ongoing activities, consistently buy recycled paper and other recycled products, and demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement.

In addition to meeting the award requirements, the Gallery stands out by using a Toyota Prius as the company car, storing and re-using all packaging and shipping materials, buying local and using local businesses for printing and framing. Gallery owners Mark and Chantelle Gamba attribute their success to their deep personal commitment to the planet.

"We run virtually every decision we make through an environmental-impact filter," says Chantelle Gamba, gallery manager. "The materials that we used to finish the space, the company car, the products we use daily, all of those choices are based on creating as small a carbon footprint as possible."

Waste Reduction Specialist Shannon Martin of Clackamas County's Office of Sustainability has seen the eco-friendly ways the gallery space is finished. Floors are natural linoleum, wood trim is FSC-Certified wood, and a custom wood shelf is hardwood reclaimed from the landlord's family farm. Low VOC paints were used throughout the gallery, the internal doors were reclaimed from former building tenants, and specialized rubber flooring is made from recycled tires. The restroom boasts a low-volume, dual flush toilet and an instant hot water heater. Cups, silverware and plates were purchased used and are taken home and washed. The office furniture is second-hand from a local used furniture supply house.

The Gallery location was chosen with the same criteria. The Gambas purchased their home in Milwaukie within walking distance to their children's school and chose rental space based on being able to easily walk to work and Banking, postal and other business services.

Gamba remarked, "I think it's really exciting that Clackamas County has an Office of Sustainability and is demonstrating a commitment to the environment. It shows a forward way of thinking and I think that bodes well for growth."
